GRAS
GRAS
Definition: “Generally Recognized As Safe” is an FDA designation that a chemical or substance added to food is considered safe by experts.
In Context
Most common terpenes (like Limonene, Pinene) are GRAS for *food use* (ingestion). However, this designation does not automatically imply safety for inhalation (vaping) or high-concentration topical use. FEMA (Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association) also maintains a GRAS list specifically for flavor ingredients.
Common Misconceptions
GRAS status is route-specific. A substance can be GRAS for eating but toxic when inhaled into the lungs (e.g., Vitamin E Acetate).
