Terpene vs Terpenoid
Terpene vs Terpenoid
Definition: “Terpenes” are simple hydrocarbons (consisting only of carbon and hydrogen), while “terpenoids” (or isoprenoids) are modified terpenes that contain additional functional groups, usually oxygen.
In Context
While often used interchangeably in the cannabis and essential oil industries, the distinction matters chemically. Living plants typically produce terpenes; however, upon drying and curing (oxidation), many convert to terpenoids. This is why the scent profile of cured flower differs from the live plant.
Common Misconceptions
Many assume “terpenoid” implies synthetic or artificial. This is false; terpenoids are naturally occurring and abundant in nature (e.g., Linalool is technically a terpene alcohol/terpenoid).
